Despite being similar in many aspects, there are differences between these two that may affect the choice of users. I still use Picasa's software to manage my photos on my PC though, it's great! There's a "send to Flickr" plugin that puts a button on picasa that makes it easy to upload your pictures to flickr. Flickr and Picasa are two of the most well-known names when it comes to sharing photos online. The big downside is that if the unthinkable happens and you actually need to restore all your photos from Flickr, it's a pretty labor-intensive process, you could probably find a script or something but otherwise there's no way to just download a whole group of photos at once. No RAW though unfortunately, as far as I can tell it just gets converted to JPEG when you upload. The Pro account cost me 24.95 for one year. I do have a Pro account, which gives me unlimited photo and video uploads, along with some other extra features. I also weed out most of my photographs before uploading them to Flickr, unlike Picasa Web Albums, which I discuss below. I'm using flickr to back up pretty much all my pictures. I use Flickr for non-private photographs, such as landscape photos.

Theoretically that means that if you get a pro account you can upload as many pics as you want at maximum res and they will stay there forever even if you stop renewing your pro account next year. Flickr has unlimited storage space for free and for something like $25/year you have unlimited upload allowance as well. Picasa is an image organizer and image viewer for organizing and editing.
